I was looking forward to the new Channel 4 series "The House the 50s built" last night, and it was interesting viewing.
One thing that slightly freaked me out was learning that formica and melamine contain formaldehyde - I'm hoping that any toxic evilness has leaked out of my vintage stuff years ago.
Here are some vintage Formica tables from my private table-porn collection.
Guaranteed non-toxic for safe internet viewing.
ooh, yes the formaldehyde thing was scary... and how people did cope pre-washing machine, pre-disposable nappies, etc? things were grim then! x
ReplyDeleteI'm not as old as this will make me sound, but was too poor to afford an automatic washer in the 80s, so the programme brought back horrible memories of washing baby clothes and terry nappies in a twin tub. I still remember the horrible smell of boiling hot rubber and washing powder.
ReplyDeleteI felt a bit ashamed to realise that what I had viewed as an instrument of torture was a wonderful, labour-saving device for an earlier generation of women.
How quickly we get used to the luxuries we have.
Must admit, I always thought of twintubs as a bit "well, why did they bother to invent THAT".... I remember my mum having to hoik the washing from one side to the other with hers, but like you say, to have been able to buy one of those and ditch the washboard and mangle = bliss! I still think housework is boring, repetitive and too time consuming - sooo glad I wasn't born earlier;) x
